Achieving The Perfect Pout

Lip fillers are now more popular than ever thanks to celebrity culture and Instagram documenting the lives of stars like Kylie Jenner.

Back in 2015, news of Kylie Jenner having lip fillers caused a surge of enquiries in some clinics, with one London practice reporting a 70% rise in lip filler enquiries in the 24 hours following the news.

As the demand for fillers increases, so does the number of people hoping to make some quick cash and set up as practitioners administering this specialist treatment. Unfortunately, many are unqualified, untrained and using inferior products which can all result in long-term health problems. Shockingly, there are also numerous videos on YouTube detailing how to purchase products online and do lip fillers yourself!

The use of unregulated products is especially worrying to me as a registered nurse. In the last two years, Google has seen an 88% rise in the number of people searching for lip fillers and in the last year the number of new lip products has grown by more than 10%.

My filler of choice is derived from hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance in the body, and it can easily be reversed if necessary.

Hyaluronic acid is the most commonly used product for lip injections and lasts for about 6 months. Variations of the filler include Restylane and Juvederm both of which are high-quality market-leading products I use in my clinic.

An unregulated, cheap product administered by someone who is neither trained or medically qualified can have disastrous results and this is when clients can turn to me and fellow professionals to put things right. This is a long and costly process and one that the NHS will not undertake. This is exactly what happened to my client Lucy; listen to her story here.

If you’re thinking of getting lip fillers, then ensure you find a reputable practitioner  that fulfills  these criteria:

  • Has medical training and qualifications
  • Are up-to-date with the latest products and techniques
  • Have a full in-depth consultation with you before your initial aesthetic procedure
  • Explain your treatment and the risks associated with it prior to undertaking the treatment
  • Take before and after photos of the area to be treated
  • Keep a written record of your treatment
  • Provide you with detailed aftercare information
  • Are easily contactable should you have any questions afterwards
  • Offers a free follow-up aftercare review
  • Purchase and use only the best, FDA-approved products
